Sarotia

About us

The name is the promise

A sarothi never beats their own drum; the joy of arrival belongs to the traveller.

The story behind the name

At the heart of Sarotia lies the Bengali word "Sarothi" — the one who holds the reins. In Bengali this word has never meant merely a driver; we say "sarothi of progress", "sarothi of dreams" — the one who takes on the responsibility of carrying someone else's journey to its destination. Picture the person whose hands on the reins let the traveller close their eyes without worry. Joined to this Bengali root is the Latin suffix "-ia", the ending ancient Europe gave its lands (Venetia, Britannia). The result sounds like some old, trusted territory — the soul of Bengal within, the attire of the world without.
